[News] Jang Hyuk adds another movie to his busy schedule.

[News] Jang Hyuk adds another movie to his busy schedule.
Cr. - javabeans

Jang Hyuk has signed on to another project, and that’s in addition to his movie The Client and the upcoming drama Midas: He has been cast in a cop movie called '독종', which translates to Tough Guy, or heartless or hardass. Take your pick.

The movie is an action thriller that stars Jung Jin-young (Itawon Murder Case) as a hardened detective trying to solve a “labyrinthine” case whose statute of limitations is on the cusp of expiration. Jang Hyuk is his suspect, a criminal who skillfully wriggles his way free of the police dragnet that attempts to capture him.

Jang’s role is described as fairly small in comparison to Jung’s lead role, but promises to have “a strong impact” in the movie. I’m thinking that means we’ll see him as a mysterious villain who remains on the fringes, rather than one half of an equal showdown a la Psychic or Secret Reunion.

Perhaps having a smaller role will explain how Jang will manage shooting the film, which begins its shoots in April, when he’ll also be in the thick of shooting financial-world-themed drama Midas — that premieres on February 28. Methinks he’s in for a lot of long nights and packed days.

In any case, this film will give him some practice playing an accused criminal, since his character in The Client is also a prime suspect (of the murder of his wife).

[News] Park Shi-yeon drops film, Park Ye-jin steps in.

[News] Park Shi-yeon drops film, Park Ye-jin steps in.
Cr. - javabeans

Music-industry-centric movie Happy Together had originally cast Park Shi-yeon (Coffee House) in the lead role opposite Ji Hyun-woo, but Park has been forced to withdraw at the last minute due to her health, leaving just over a month before the film is to begin shooting.

According to her management, Park had previously received surgery on her back, which is acting up again, making it difficult for her to film. (Aftereffects of her surgery are also the reason she’d left variety show Family Outing a year ago.)

Instead, My Princess’s resident sourface bitchypants, Park Ye-jin, has been tapped to take over the role of a thirtysomething producer who wants to groom the twentysomething lead (Ji Hyun-woo) into an idol star. She joins rather late in the game and will be busy jumping from one project right into another, beginning shoots on Happy Together right after the currently airing My Princess wraps.

Kim Su-ro (God of Study) and ex-2PM member Park Jae-bum also star in Happy Together, which begins principal photography in March.

[News] Kim Tae-hee Wins Over Viewers with 'My Princess'.

[News] Kim Tae-hee Wins Over Viewers with 'My Princess'.
Cr. - hancinema

Her stunning beauty is beyond dispute, but actress Kim Tae-hee has always been criticized for her wooden acting. She struggled even more in films than on TV, and none of her movies, including "The Restless", "Venus and Mars" and "Grand Prix", were a success at the box office.

But the soap "My Princess", currently on MBC, seems to have changed all that, and viewers have taken to Kim's adorable but comic character in a big way. They seem to enjoy seeing the inelegant side of someone who seems to have it all. And criticism of her acting skills seems on the wane.

"Viewers cheer when an actor shows a side that has never been seen before", one critic says. "But when the actor still gets criticized for their acting afterwards they tend to go back to their old image, and that can be fatal". In other words, the real test for Kim starts after "My Princess".

Of course, there are still some people criticizing Kim's acting on the web board of the "My Princess" homepage. In fact, Kim is perhaps the epitome of a star who appears in more commercials than films or TV series.

Others include Kim Hee-seon, Jeon Ji-hyeon, Ko So-young and Lee Young-ae. More recently, hin Min-ah and Lee Min-jeong also raised their profile through commercials before being cast in leading roles in films or TV series.

But while the financial rewards are great, viewers tend to disapprove. Woon Goon-il, a former SBS executive, said, "Actors should communicate with their audience through proper work with a story. If they shun it and bury themselves in commercials, their career is inevitably cut short".

[News] Lee Min-ho greets fans with a Lunar New Year’s message.
Original : http://twssg.blogspot.com/

Last year, Lee Min-ho has been selected to play a leading role in the upcoming drama, “City Hunter”. This drama was based on a cartoon of the same name written by Tsukasa Hojo. Set in the latter half of the 1980s, the story takes place in Tokyo. The main character, Saeba Ryo, takes in cases upon requests from beautiful women and puzzles them out one by one. As the story developed, it gathered a great deal of popularity. However, it’s the first time in 13 years that the cartoon has been televised in movie or drama form.

The Korean version of “City Hunter” will be set in the year 2011 at Seoul, instead of Tokyo in the 1980s. According to a representative of the SBS Drama Division, the drama will be aired on SBS this year on May.

On February 2nd, Hallyu star Lee Min-ho sent his fans a Lunar New Year’s message through his official Facebook account.

He wrote, “Happy Lunar New Year!^^. I am going to celebrate this New Year’s Day with my family in Seoul ^^ Where are you celebrating? Enjoy your holidays and take care! Thank you always for your support!”

The actor delivered his message in both Korean and English, and wrote “Happy Lunar New Year” in Chinese and Japanese, as well.

It has already been five years since Choi Ji Woo’s last Japanese drama, “RONDO” (2006), in which she had a starring role. She stated that the reason for her guest appearance simply is the fact that, “It is a drama starring Kusanagi”.

The actor, who is fluent in Korean, was glad about the addition as well, and said, “Since there is going to be Choi Ji Woo, it’s going become an even better drama.”

Due to Choi Ji Woo’s long absence from Japanese productions, her Japanese was a bit rusty and she had to confirm her intonation with the staff a couple of times. Choi Ji Woo and I have already promised to work together in the near future again.”

Hallyu Star Song Hye-kyo revealed her feelings about the issue going on about the launching of her photograph collection and related VIPs.

Song Hye-kyo had an event launching "Moment, Song Hye-kyo", her photography collection on the 28th in BOONTHESHOP.

Programs like a charity music concert for the guests, introduction of Song Hye-kyo's book and video image, autograph session and such were held on this day, which holds a significant purpose of donating all profits from the actress's picture collection in collaboration with fashion multi-shop, BOONTHESHOP.

However, one media caused an issue by reporting that Song He-kyo is only selling her books to those in the top 1% in Korea and only invited the VIPs of department stores.

It turns out however, according to the host, that part of the profits from the sales of the collection was donated to a children's foundation and was held for good causes.

Her company states, "This picture collection is 5 years of Song Hye-kyo and is a charity event. We hope a meaningful event like this doesn't get distorted because of media coverage".

Those who attended the event were those related to BOONTHESHOP, the publications, Song Hye-kyo's acquaintances and friends, photographers, stylists and diplomats who gave support in making the collection.

Song Hye-kyo's collection took almost 5 years to complete in Buenos Aires, New York, Paris, Genova, Firenze and more, with a limited edition of 2000 copies, selling in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

[News] Gu Hye-sun directs festival trailer.

[News] Gu Hye-sun directs festival trailer.
Cr. - javabeans

Actress and budding director Gu Hye-sun is back behind the camera as she takes on the directing of the official trailer for the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul. She’s done a trailer of this kind before, for 2009′s 7th Asiana International Short Film Festival, so she’s got some experience, even if the trailers are super-short (approximately 1 minute in length).

As you probably are aware, Gu has spent the better part of the past two years focusing on her interests outside of acting, such as songwriting, drawing, writing, and directing. She does have an acting project in the works (the drama The Musical), but for whatever reason, it has yet to secure a broadcaster or a timeslot and has been languishing for a while. One wonders when it’ll finally see the light of day — will it be like Birdie Buddy and fade into nothing, or Paradise Ranch and hit airwaves eventually?

It appears that she’s more interested in directing than performing at the moment, and she has been writing her next feature length film, a vampire romance that she intends to direct. Truth be told, I prefer her as an actress, and it’s the area where I think she’s strongest (though, funny enough, her biggest project — Boys Before Flowers — is pretty much her worst acting performance), though I’m sure it’s her prerogative to spend her time developing other interests.

This year’s festival (the 13th) takes on the theme of women in action, which’ll serve as the main motif of Gu’s trailer, and takes place on April 7 through 14.

[News] Kim Jae-wook’s band first single releases.

[News] Kim Jae-wook’s band first single releases.
Cr. - javabeans

Actor Kim Jae-wook, who’s recently come off his stint on the disappointing drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, has turned his attention back to music, with his band WALRUS (formerly I Am Walrus). They’re releasing their first single album with music videos (below). From faux indie rock to real indie rock? I say the real Kim Jae-wook is pretty much cooler than any character he could ever play.

WALRUS is: Kim Jae-wook on vocals and guitar, Kim Tae-hyun on drums, Yoo Seung-bum on lead guitar (blonde hair and teacup, below), and Yang Shi-on on bass (with pomegranate, below). They’re college friends and classmates from the Seoul Institute of the Arts, and have been performing on and off together for upwards of nine years, and performed at 2009′s Grand Mint Festival.

They produced the album themselves, with three songs: “To Be,” “Mozaic,” and “Seoul Witch” [서울마녀]. “Seoul Witch” is their title track, about the loneliness of living in a cold city. The video below is for “To Be,” and the teaser for “Seoul Witch” is below.

It was sad to see him go from such a great turn in Bad Guy to the dull character he had to play in Mary, but hell, that drama was a waste of everybody’s talents, not just his. Clearly he should get his own drama…playing himself.

[News] Yoon Shi-yoon scores first leading role in film.

[News] Yoon Shi-yoon scores first leading role in film.
Cr. - javabeans

Last year’s king of baking and king of ratings Yoon Shi-yoon (Baker King Kim Tak-gu) lands his first leading role in the movie One Hundred Percent, about…golf. Really? What’s with the golf stories lately? Didn’t they notice what happened to Birdie Buddy? I get that it’s a big sport, but it’s the dramatic appeal that’s lost on me. Oh well. Yoon Shi-yoon managed to make the whole country care about baking, so maybe he’s got it in him to start some golf frenzy. Ha. Now that’s an oxymoron. Isn’t golf the sport where the audience does the silent clap?

Yoon Shi-yoon will be playing…wait for it…a GENIUS pro golfer. Pfft. Oh, K-Drama/Film-land. Sigh. Why does every character have to be a frickin’ genius at something? It makes me laugh to think that based on these odds, everyone and their mother in Korea is a genius. Throw a stone, hit a genius. Why yes, that person makes a good cup of coffee, but he’s no ordinary barista. He’s a genius barista!

On an up note, it’s a comedy, so there’s potential to see a new side of Yoon Shi-yoon, and for it to not take the genius thing too seriously. It’ll be helmed by first-time director Kim Myung-kyun, and rounded out by veterans Chun Ho-jin (Paradise Ranch), Park Sang-myun (Mary’s papa in Mary Stayed Out All Night), Lee Byung-joon (Principal Shi in Dream High, Director Park in Secret Garden), and Lee Kyung-young (Invincible).

Yoon said, “It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever played golf, so it’s hard. But since I learned the form, I’m falling in love with the sport. It’s a lot of pressure to play the lead in a movie for the first time, but I won’t get cold feet and I’m going to do my best.”

And while Yoon Shi-yoon is no genius actor, he’s a pretty darn good one, for a relative newbie, and I’m looking forward to seeing him in more comedic roles. Perhaps it’ll be a nice transitional project out of makjang-land and into a rom-com? One Hundred Percent starts shooting this weekend.

[News] Choi Ji-woo comeback for new drama 'Medical College'.

[News] Choi Ji-woo comeback for new drama 'Medical College'.
Cr. - javabeans

The Goddess of Melodrama herself, Hallyu star Choi Ji-woo (A Star’s Lover, Air City, Winter Sonata) is planning a return to the small screen with the drama Medical School. Well, the title is informative, I’ll give you that, but not so punchy. (I assure you, it’s the same in Korean: 의과대학). I can’t say that I’m all aflutter for a medical melodrama (been theeeeere, done thaaaaat), but I’m happy to hear news that Choi Ji-woo is returning to television.

It’s one thing javabeans and I always say that we love about the K-drama system: that miniseries mean big stars can commit to TV shows without signing away years of their lives, which means they can regularly return to the medium that launched their careers. (See: Lee Byung-heon in IRIS, Bae Yong-joon in Legend).

It’s been two years since her last drama, 2009′s A Star’s Lover, but she’s since starred in the film Actresses alongside heavy-hitter Go Hyun-jung, who is, at least in the last few years, out-shining Choi as the hottest act in town. Perhaps this drama will be the commercial success that she needs to put her back in the game. (Not that, you know, she’s starving or anything.)

She’ll first be starring in the Japanese melodrama Winter Cherry Blossom on TBS, and then move onto pre-production for Medical School. Looks like there’s a chance we’ll see Choi Ji-woo back in K-dramaland before the year is out.

[News] Song Hye-kyo Returns to Spotlight with Photobook.
Cr. - http://english.chosun.com/

Hallyu Star Song Hye-kyo is releasing a glamorous photobook of her shot by several top photographers including the fashion world's Peter Lindbergh and supermodel-turned-photographer Helena Christensen.

The first of its kind by a Korean actress, the book entitled "Moment" is to be released Friday with proceeds to be donated to an organization for children. Pre-orders have already been placed overseas for over half of the limited first run of 2,000 copies.

Song, 28, was hardly seen on TV after the 2008 drama "Worlds Within", instead participating mostly in small-scale independent films and overseas projects.

She appeared in the episode "Love for Sale" of the omnibus film "Camellia", which screened at last year's Pusan International Film Festival. She also made her overseas debut with the U.S. indie film "Fetish", and played a role in renowned director Wong Kar-wai's new film "The Grand Master".

In between these productions she worked on the photobook, staying overseas for several months to shoot. The book features photos of the actress taken in locations around the world, including Atlanta, New York, Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Paris, the Netherlands and Brazil.
